nest of patience
A collaboration with calligrapher, Cheryl Jacobsen. Created 2009.
Based on a medieval girdle book, Nest of Patience is a contemporary Book of Hours contemplating the concept of patience by way of words, poetry, fortunes, and nature. The book begins with a spiritual calendar of days and proceeds with eight sections, each headed with a nesting totem animal: hare, goose, heron, crane, turtle, owl, hummingbird, kingfisher.
Full vellum text block includes hand-stitched indigo-dyed translucent panels, hand-lettered texts, illuminations, and sewn-in found objects relating to patience. Wooden board binding, sewn on hemp cords and laced into beech boards. Girdle chemise comprising dyed and distressed leather, indigo- and walnut-dyed cloth, linen and silk thread.
The content is a collaboration of both the artists, and reflects a combined query into the nature and import of patience. The inset panel illustrations were drawn and stitched by Kristin, and illuminated by Cheryl. All calligraphic work is the artistry of Cheryl; the binding and chemise design are the work of Kristin. The book was acquisitioned by University of Iowa Libraries Special Collections in 2012.
