mahamudra quilt
In this project I visually explore Mahamudra meditation practices. The project was conceived upon reading a quote by Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche: “When a thought arises observe its origin, duration and dissolution.” In this quote I felt the process of stitching (the beginning, length, and end of a stitch) and began to depict aspects of Mahamudra meditation—dullness, agitation, stillness and movement of mind, etc. with improvisational stitch work.
This project continues with the guidelines of the field experiments (2015-16), while dedicating the subject of exploration to Mahamudra meditation. Those guidelines were to: 1) use materials I had on hand, 2) capture a meaningful moment in my days, 3) to stitch impromptu, without an applied pattern or guide and 4) explore the use of small stitches with thin thread
In 2018 I engaged in a 6 month Mahamudra Intensive with Tergar/Mingyur Rinpoche. I completed these eight blocks during those 6 months as I studied and practiced Mahamudra. I will, at some point, sew them together into a single quilt.
